High-end car service in Lower Merion targets consumers still interested in traditional cab options.

Maxwell Taxi Cab Co., a well-regarded establishment in the Lower Merion area and a staple of the Main Line community, has been reborn following its closure earlier this year. The cab company, which served the region for over five decades, has been acquired by ML Car Service Ltd, a Bryn Mawr-based limousine service. This acquisition marks a new chapter for both the legacy of Maxwell and the operational strategy of ML Car Service.

The transition began when ML Car Service, which has been operational for ten years, took over Maxwell’s longstanding telephone number at the end of April. Jerry Hevey, CEO and managing member of ML Car Service, expressed enthusiasm for the acquisition but refrained from disclosing the financial details of the deal. Hevey highlighted the importance of Maxwell’s well-established reputation within the community, which he believes aligns perfectly with his company’s existing services.

As the transportation industry evolves, Hevey remains optimistic about the demand for traditional car and limousine services. He noted that the COVID-19 pandemic and the rise of ridesharing platforms like Uber and Lyft have dramatically affected the viability of many taxi services, leading to the unfortunate closure of Maxwell. Co-owner George Fusaro previously acknowledged these industry challenges, stating that operational costs became unsustainable.

Despite these hurdles, Hevey has confidence in ML Car Service’s pricing strategy. He believes their rates will be competitive with rideshare services, especially considering the quality of the vehicles provided. Customers can expect to ride in high-end vehicles, such as Cadillac Escalades, Lincoln sedans, or Teslas, giving them an experience that feels luxurious while remaining accessible.

Currently, ML Car Service’s pricing ranges from to 5, depending on the service. Hevey emphasized the reliability and consistency of their service, which has already attracted former Maxwell customers, resulting in an increase in daily bookings. Many of these requests involve airport pickups and drop-offs, highlighting a strong demand for reliable transportation in the area.

ML Car Service aims to expand its reach further, looking to hire additional drivers to meet growing customer demand. Hevey noted a diverse client base that includes individuals across various age groups, with many callers coming from the former Maxwell clientele who are seeking dependable service for appointments, family gatherings, and more.

In a departure from the practices of ridesharing platforms, ML Car Service offers payment options in cash or card, although reservations must be made in advance, adding a layer of planning and personal touch that may appeal to customers who prefer traditional service methods. As ML Car Service continues to establish itself in the market, Hevey anticipates further growth and an expanded presence in the local transportation landscape.

This resurgence of a community favorite highlights the ongoing evolution of transportation services and the adaptability of businesses in a competitive environment.
