Horizon West Bay in Largo to open later than expected, now set for late summer.
LARGO — The Horizon West Bay project, a substantial mixed-use development estimated at million, is poised to introduce a new Largo City Hall alongside nearly 20,000 square feet designated for restaurants and retail space. Initially slated for completion in the spring, specifically targeting late March to early April, the timeline has been significantly disrupted by the impact of recent hurricanes that struck Pinellas County.
In the wake of these natural disasters, construction activities across the region were halted as the immediate priority shifted to evaluating damage and demolishing compromised structures. Consequently, the Horizon West Bay project is also experiencing delays, with Largo Mayor Woody Brown announcing a revised opening timeline anticipated later this summer. Mayor Brown indicated that contractors are projecting a ribbon-cutting ceremony in late July, followed by a grand opening at the beginning of August. However, he expressed a degree of skepticism regarding this timeframe, suggesting a more realistic expectation for early September at the latest.
The Mayor acknowledged the challenges arising from the current construction environment in Pinellas County, where a high demand for labor exists. He emphasized that the ongoing delays, while regrettable, are understandable given the circumstances. Despite these setbacks, Brown noted that construction crews have been diligently working around the clock to expedite the project’s completion, which is crucial for the local community.
The delays may position retail tenants, such as Louis Pappas Fresh Greek, to establish operations before the City Hall opens its doors. This projection aligns with the city’s strategic vision for the development, as confirmed by the recent ten-year lease agreement with Pappas, which encompasses a 1,431-square-foot restaurant space within the complex. The base rent for the establishment is expected to range from ,600 to ,000 monthly, with the city investing 5,000 towards the buildout costs to enhance the tenant’s success.
In addition to the partnership with Pappas, Colliers International, the project’s retail broker, has successfully secured a deal with Indiana-based Parlor Doughnuts, further enriching the retail offerings anticipated within the Horizon West Bay development. This mixed-use project stands as a significant addition to Largo, promising to enhance the area’s commercial landscape while bolstering the local economy.
As the project progresses towards completion, stakeholders remain hopeful for a revitalized urban center that will serve the needs of Largo’s residents and visitors alike.
