Hunter Biden disbarred in Connecticut due to complaints related to gun and tax convictions.
In a significant legal development, Hunter Biden was disbarred on Monday by a Connecticut judge for breaching the professional conduct rules governing attorneys in the state. This ruling is rooted in several complaints regarding Biden’s prior federal gun and tax convictions, offenses for which he received a pardon last year from his father, former President Joe Biden.
In a disciplinary agreement with the state’s Office of Chief Disciplinary Counsel, Hunter Biden consented to the disbarment and acknowledged instances of attorney misconduct. Notably, he did not admit to any criminal wrongdoing. Earlier this year, in May, he faced a similar fate when he was disbarred in Washington, D.C.
Biden’s appearance in court was made virtually alongside his attorney, Ross Garber, during a hearing overseen by Judge Trial Referee Patrick L. Carroll III. Biden refrained from making any statements during the proceedings.
The disbarment follows a series of legal troubles that have increasingly placed Hunter Biden in the public eye. In 2022, he was convicted in Delaware federal court on three felony counts related to purchasing a firearm in 2018. Prosecutors asserted that Biden had lied on a federal application by stating he was not using or addicted to drugs at the time of the purchase.
Additionally, Biden was initially set to face a trial in September 2024 in California regarding accusations of failing to pay over .4 million in federal taxes. However, he agreed to plead guilty to various misdemeanor and felony charges just hours before jury selection was scheduled to begin.
The court found that Biden’s actions constituted violations of multiple ethical standards for attorneys, which include engaging in conduct that involved dishonesty, fraud, deceit, or misrepresentation. While he admitted to certain allegations of misconduct, he contested some claims made against him. The judge referenced Biden’s disbarment in Washington as a significant factor in the decision.
Paul Dorsey, a complainant in the case, expressed his objection during the hearing, arguing that Biden’s lack of admission regarding criminal conduct undermined the disciplinary agreement. In response, attorney Leanne Larson emphasized the context of the prior pardon.
Hunter Biden, who was admitted to the Connecticut bar in 1997 after graduating from Yale Law School, has faced increasing scrutiny as legal complications surrounding his personal and financial affairs continue to unfold.
