The CJP, a satirical political movement founded on Instagram, emerged in May 2026 after India’s Chief Justice ignited controversy by comparing unemployed youth to “cockroaches” and “parasites.” This unorthodox political party aims to hold the government accountable, demonstrating the growing unrest among younger voters in India.
On Friday, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke announced plans for a significant protest to commence in Mumbai on October 2 if Kumar fails to resign. This urgent demand follows a report that has linked Kumar to alleged tampering with voter registration lists, a claim that opposition parties assert is designed to favor Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Dipke’s clear message on social media emphasized, “If Gyanesh Kumar does not resign by tomorrow, CJP will begin its nationwide protest from Mumbai on 2 October, and take it to cities across India.” He further urged citizens to “pledge to save democracy” on Gandhi Jayanti, a day that commemorates the birth of independence leader Mahatma Gandhi.
The call for Kumar’s resignation was prompted by a report from the Indian Express, detailing concerns raised by two election commissioners regarding Kumar’s management of the voter list updates, which were initiated last year. In response, the main opposition, the Congress party, has organized protest marches across state election offices demanding an independent review of Kumar’s actions.
Despite the outcry from opposition parties, the Election Commission of India defended its integrity. It asserted that differing viewpoints are common within the institution and emphasized that all actions taken were lawful. The BJP, meanwhile, dismissed opposition claims as a smear campaign, attributing the allegations to frustration over previous electoral losses.
