India is rapidly solidifying its ambitions in the semiconductor industry, marking a pivotal moment as it seeks to become a global hub for electronics manufacturing. Following significant investments backed by government incentives, Indian companies are laying the groundwork to meet burgeoning domestic and international demand for chips. This shift not only aims to diversify supply chains but also showcases India’s potential to play a more integral role in the technology landscape amid evolving geopolitical dynamics.

In October, a small electronics manufacturer in Gujarat shipped its first batch of chip modules to a client in California, signaling India’s growing footprint in the semiconductor sector. Kaynes Semicon, in collaboration with Japanese and Malaysian technology partners, established a factory funded by the Indian government’s ambitious billion semiconductor initiative unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2021. Modi’s strategy seeks to position India as an alternative manufacturing hub for global companies aiming to reduce reliance on China, although the transition has been gradual.

Signs of progress include the construction of India’s first commercial foundry for mature chips in Gujarat. This billion project, a joint effort between Tata Group, one of India’s largest conglomerates, and Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC), aims to utilize technology transfer to bolster local production capabilities. Moreover, Intel has entered into an agreement with Tata Electronics to explore manufacturing opportunities in the new facilities, which could address the escalating domestic demand for semiconductors.

Despite these advancements, experts highlight that significant challenges remain. Although India has demonstrated prowess in chip design, converting this into manufacturing success has proved difficult. Acknowledging the progress made over the past two to three years due to increased political will and private sector commitment, experts still caution that foreign investment is crucial to advance beyond current capabilities in semiconductor technology.

Upcoming initiatives, particularly in assembly, testing, and packaging—often seen as the easier entry point into semiconductor production—are bolstered by the Modi government’s financial incentives. Notable projects from companies like Micron Technology and Tata are set to strengthen India’s position in the global supply chain, as production ramps up in response to escalating demand driven by various sectors, including automotive and consumer electronics.

As India aims to capture a share of this lucrative market, its semiconductor ambitions are increasingly seen as essential to realizing broader economic goals. With robust investments already in place, the government recognizes the need to attract foreign partners to compete effectively against global peers. While India’s semiconductor incentives are substantial, they still fall short compared to the more significant commitments made by countries like China and the United States. To sustain growth and innovation in the sector, further enhancements to the business environment—supporting reliable infrastructure and regulatory frameworks—are necessary.

The future of India’s semiconductor landscape remains promising as it embarks on projects set to deliver chips that could enhance both local production and export capabilities.
