Israel Attacks Iranian State TV Following Threats of Elimination
In a significant escalation of tensions between Israel and Iran, the Israeli military has launched an attack on the Iranian state broadcaster IRIB, disrupting a live broadcast with a powerful explosion. This event mirrors previous strikes Israel has conducted on media outlets in Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon. The incident has raised considerable international concern regarding the safety of journalists and the impact on media freedom in the region.
TV anchor Sahar Emami, during the live broadcast, described the event as an “aggression against the homeland” and a strike against truth itself, as the explosion filled the studio with smoke and chaos. The attack aligns with recent threats issued by Israeli officials, including Defence Minister Israel Katz, who referred to the IRIB as an outlet for Iranian propaganda.
Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei condemned the action as a “wicked act” that may violate international law, particularly regarding the protection of journalists. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has reported alarming figures, indicating that the conflict in Gaza has resulted in the deaths of 178 journalists since October 2023, marking an unprecedented level of risk for media personnel.
Baghaei urged the United Nations Security Council to take immediate action against what he termed a “genocidal aggressor.” The CPJ also denounced the attack on IRIB and attributed the targeting of media organizations in various regions to a culture of impunity fostered by earlier acts of violence against journalists.
Peyman Jebelli, head of IRIB, stated that the attack was a direct response to the broadcaster’s effectiveness in countering enemy narratives. He affirmed the commitment of IRIB’s personnel to continue their role in what he termed the hybrid war initiated by Israel.
Eyewitness reports from Iranian journalists such as Younes Shadlou highlighted the peril faced by many colleagues during the attack, who opted to remain in the studio until the last moment to demonstrate resilience against external threats. Al Jazeera’s Dorsa Jabbari emphasized the symbolic significance of the attack, noting that IRIB serves as a crucial voice for the Iranian government, with its leadership appointed by the supreme leader.
Despite the challenges posed by the attack, Emami returned to broadcast following the explosion, potentially enhancing her profile among viewers. Academia, notably Foad Izadi from the University of Tehran, anticipated considerable casualties due to the size of the building and the density of personnel present during the incident.
The Israeli military defended its actions by alleging that IRIB operated under the guise of civilian broadcasting while serving military purposes, a claim that remains contested and unproven. Following the attack, Iran promptly issued evacuation warnings to Israeli news channels, signaling a continued escalation in media-targeted hostilities.
