Israeli Zero-Click Malware Threatens Global Security Infrastructure

As technology continues to evolve, so too do the methods used by malicious actors to compromise personal security. A recent investigation reveals a troubling yet innovative form of cyberattack known as “zero-click” malware, which exploits online advertising to infiltrate users’ devices without any direct interaction. This alarming development not only highlights the vulnerabilities in our digital ecosystems but also raises critical questions about the extent of privacy we can expect in an increasingly connected world.
A recent investigation has unveiled an alarming new form of cyberattack, termed “zero-click” malware, which enables hackers to gain access to personal devices without requiring the user to click on any malicious links or downloads. This sophisticated technique, associated with an Israeli spyware company, has raised serious concerns among cybersecurity experts and highlights the urgent need for improved online safety measures.
In June 2025, devices employed by journalists at Al Jazeera, including those covering sensitive topics, fell victim to these zero-click attacks. The initial detection came from Al Jazeera’s internal technology team, which noticed unusual patterns on certain devices as early as 2024. Subsequent analysis led by the Canada-based Citizen Lab confirmed that the Israeli firm Candiru was behind the invasive software that infiltrated staff members’ devices without any prior warnings.
Cybersecurity experts regard these findings as a significant escalation in the threat landscape. Remesh Srinivasan, a professor at UCLA, emphasized the unprecedented level of precision in targeting individuals, signifying a new chapter in surveillance capabilities. The invasive nature of this malware poses a critical challenge to privacy and security, confirming fears about the growing sophistication of cyberattacks.
Zero-click malware operates by embedding itself within malicious advertisements purchased by firms like Discover-Tech, which claims to be a legitimate advertising agency. This company manipulates online advertisement auctions to identify and target Al Jazeera personnel, successfully redirecting them to servers controlled by Candiru. The spyware is known for its illegal surveillance activities, having been blacklisted by the U.S. government in 2021 due to its role in monitoring journalists and activists across numerous countries.
Once installed, the spyware not only collects sensitive files and browser data but also has the capability of recording keystrokes, capturing images through webcams and microphones, and exfiltrating emails and messages. Its sophisticated design allows it to communicate information securely and discreetly, making detection exceedingly challenging for users.
Further, Citizen Lab’s report underscores the critical flaws within the online advertising framework that allowed for such breaches to occur unnoticed. With the advertising industry often prioritizing immediate revenue over security practices, malicious installations via ads have been found on networks of high-profile organizations, including the United Nations and various governmental entities, pointing to a widespread vulnerability that affects many sectors.
Experts caution that while these attacks are primarily aimed at high-risk targets such as journalists and officials, the potential for collateral damage remains. The advisory is clear: individuals at elevated risk should implement robust security measures, including ad blockers and privacy controls, to mitigate their exposure to these threats.
The insights from this investigation shed light on the increasing necessity for regulatory oversight within the digital advertisement landscape. Experts assert that both the advertising industry and regulatory bodies must take immediate action to ensure a safer environment, particularly by improving vetting processes and protecting personal data from unregulated access.
As the digital realm continues to evolve, so too must our strategies for safeguarding personal information from malicious threats, ensuring that an online presence does not come at the expense of individual security.
