Italian tourist held captive and tortured for three weeks in Manhattan apartment.

An Italian tourist endured a harrowing experience in Manhattan after reportedly being held captive and tortured inside an apartment for several weeks. The 28-year-old victim, who had arrived in the United States on May 6, ultimately managed to escape his captors and sought assistance from authorities on the morning of May 23.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) has detained John Woeltz, a 37-year-old cryptocurrency trader from Kentucky, as the primary suspect in the case. Following the victim’s escape around 10 a.m. near the corner of Prince and Mulberry Streets, he flagged down a traffic agent, who promptly contacted law enforcement.

According to police reports, the victim and Woeltz had initially connected through their mutual interest in cryptocurrency. Upon arriving at Woeltz’s residence, the victim was allegedly restrained and subjected to various forms of torture, despite specific details of these acts remaining undisclosed. Additionally, Woeltz reportedly confiscated the victim’s passport, further complicating his situation.

Upon investigation, NYPD officers discovered a firearm and Polaroid photographs depicting the victim bound and tortured within the apartment. At the time of the police’s arrival, two other individuals were present in the residence; however, authorities believe they were housekeepers or building staff.

Woeltz was taken into custody and is currently being questioned by detectives from the NYPD. As of now, formal charges have not been filed against him. Witnesses reported seeing a man fitting Woeltz’s description emerging from the building in handcuffs, dressed in a white bathrobe. The witness described the man as appearing respectable and business-like.

This shocking incident has taken many locals by surprise, given the upscale nature of the neighborhood, where rent prices for similar apartments typically exceed ,000 to ,000 per month. Witnesses expressed disbelief, noting that such occurrences are unexpected in a community characterized by its affluent residents.

In addition to Woeltz’s apprehension, police are actively searching for a second suspect in connection with the case. The situation remains under investigation as authorities gather more details regarding the alleged crimes committed in this New York City locale.

As this disturbing story unfolds, it raises critical questions about safety and security in urban environments and the potential dangers that can arise within seemingly safe community settings.
