Jackie the Big Bear eagle, rescued after a fight, was discovered on the ground, raising concerns among fans.
Officials are currently working to identify an adult eagle that was rescued in Big Bear Valley, California, after it was observed on the ground for several hours, exhibiting unusual behavior that raised concerns among local residents. Community members spotted the eagle engaged in a confrontation with other eagles, prompting speculation that it may be associated with the well-known Big Bear eagle pair, Jackie and Shadow.
The rescued bird is undergoing treatment at a specialized care facility, but as of now, its identity and gender remain unconfirmed. Jenny Voisard, media manager for Friends of Big Bear Valley, noted that Jackie, the mother of the prominent eaglets Sandy and Luna, has not been seen on the organization’s livestream cameras for several days, contributing to the uncertainty surrounding the eagle’s origins.
The grounded eagle was initially spotted near Dana Point Park on Friday, which is an atypical behavior for eagles, as they generally prefer to perch high in trees or branches when not flying. Voisard indicated that the prolonged time spent on the ground might suggest the eagle is either fatigued or injured, although no underlying cause has been definitively established.
Videos recorded by local residents showcased the eagle engaging in aggressive behavior with two subadult eagles, which are older than eaglets but have not yet reached full maturity. During the altercation, the adult eagle adeptly flipped onto its back to fend off the younger birds that were attempting to steal its fish. Such confrontations are common among subadult eagles as they vie for resources while honing their hunting skills.
Rescue efforts for the grounded eagle commenced around 2 a.m. on Saturday, following a prolonged period of inactivity. Friends of Big Bear Valley emphasized the importance of limiting inquiries from concerned community members to avoid overwhelming the organizations involved in the eagle’s care.
Amid the concern for this particular eagle, Voisard urged the community to remain calm, emphasizing that the situation is being managed and expressing gratitude that help has arrived for the bird. The hope for a positive outcome remains strong within the community.
The eagle pair Jackie and Shadow has garnered a wide following, with their eaglets Sandy and Luna making notable appearances on the organization’s 24/7 livestream.
