Japanese cream puff brand Beard Papa’s is set to open a new store in Philadelphia’s Chinatown.
Beard Papa’s, a distinguished Japanese cream puff franchise renowned for its unique offerings, is set to inaugurate its first Philadelphia location on March 28 and 29. Situated next to the Chinatown Friendship Gate, this marks the brand’s 578th outlet and the much-anticipated debut in the City of Brotherly Love.
Founded in Osaka, Japan, in 1999 by Yuji Hirota, Beard Papa’s has gained an impressive following globally by focusing on a singular product: cream puffs. The pastries feature a hybrid crust, intricately crafted to include a thin, flaky choux pastry shell with a pie crust bottom, yielding a delightful contrast of crunch and airiness. Their custard filling, which utilizes fresh vanilla beans, ensures a mouthwatering experience that balances sweetness without overwhelming the palate.
The commencement of Beard Papa’s operations in the United States began in 2004 with a store in New York’s Upper West Side, laying the groundwork for its franchise model. The brand experienced significant growth throughout the early 2000s by licensing and franchising both domestically and internationally, with notable expansions into markets such as Indonesia, Vietnam, and Hong Kong. Most recently, the company opened a store in Leipzig, Germany, and has plans to expand further into Canada and South America.
The decision to establish a presence in Philadelphia’s Chinatown was driven by the area’s reputation as a culinary destination, as well as a gap in the local dessert market for its distinct offerings. Anticipation for a Philadelphia location has been rising, particularly among customers accustomed to frequenting the brand’s locations in New York before relocating to Philadelphia.
The new Philadelphia outlet is located at 104 N. 10th St., a site that was previously home to a burger establishment and a Chinese restaurant, allowing for a relatively straightforward transition. The operational requirements for Beard Papa’s are minimal and centered around a combination oven necessary for baking and steaming the cream puffs. The dough is shipped frozen to the franchise location, where it is baked and filled with freshly made custard, ensuring superior quality with no custard held for more than 24 hours.
Currently operating in a soft-open phase, the store will offer classic flavors such as original, matcha, and chocolate Oreo on its official opening, with plans to expand the menu to include up to a dozen varieties over time. Pricing for an original puff is set at .75, while matcha and chocolate variations will retail at each.
Business hours are projected to be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and extend to 9 p.m. on weekends, though these may be adjusted depending on customer traffic patterns. Beard Papa’s entry into Philadelphia sets the stage for a promising new chapter in the brand’s extensive footprint in the dessert landscape, appealing to both long-time fans and new customers alike.
As the brand continues to define its presence in the local market, innovative limited-time offerings are expected to further engage discerning palates and cater to the evolving preferences of Philadelphia’s vibrant dining scene.
