Kathy Romano, former cohost of ‘Preston & Steve,’ secures new radio position in Philadelphia.

Kathy Romano, a prominent figure in Philadelphia radio, is set to return to the airwaves after a four-month hiatus. Romano, who served as a co-host on the notable morning show “Preston & Steve” for 22 years, was unexpectedly laid off in May as part of a broader reduction by Beasley Media Group, the parent company of WMMR.

Beginning on September 23, Romano will debut two new shows on B101, a staple station in the Philadelphia market. The first show, aptly named “The Kathy Romano Show,” will air from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m., where she will co-host alongside current morning personalities Bobby Smith and Laura Boss. Additionally, Romano will host a solo midday show from 10 a.m. to noon, creating a total of six hours of programming that will directly compete with her former colleagues at WMMR.

Romano expressed her excitement about this new opportunity, emphasizing the importance of connecting with listeners on a daily basis. She stated her eagerness to engage with both the loyal B101 audience and new listeners who will accompany her on this journey alongside her co-hosts.

Romano’s departure from WMMR took both listeners and fellow hosts by surprise, particularly given the show’s long-standing popularity in the Philly area. In fact, “Preston & Steve” had recently signed a new multi-year contract to remain on the air through 2030, making the decision to let Romano go all the more unexpected. Colleagues from the show voiced their disappointment, with Preston Elliot expressing profound sadness over changes to a format that had developed a strong connection with its audience.

David Yadgaroff, the senior vice president and market manager for Audacy, the parent company of B101, warmly welcomed Romano back into the radio landscape. He described her as a smart and relatable personality deeply connected to the community, underlining her suitability for the station’s morning slot. Yadgaroff conveyed confidence that Romano would bring authenticity and energy to her new role, resonating with a diverse audience eager to start their mornings with her familiar voice.

As Romano embarks on this new chapter in her career, listeners across Philadelphia will likely anticipate her return, eager to once again experience the warmth and engagement she is known for in the vibrant world of morning radio.
