Kennedy family responds to Trump’s decision to rename the Kennedy Center.

Relatives of former President John F. Kennedy have publicly expressed their displeasure regarding the recent decision by the Kennedy Center Board, appointed by President Donald Trump, to include Trump’s name in the title of the John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts. Effective immediately, the venue will be known as The Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts, with signage reflecting this change unveiled on Friday.

The move comes on the heels of a board vote held on Thursday, during which members, selected by Trump, endorsed the controversial name alteration. This decision has provoked significant backlash from the Kennedy family, including notable figures such as JFK’s grandnephew, Joe Kennedy III, who served as a U.S. Representative. Kennedy voiced his concerns in a statement highlighting the significance of the memorial center as a lasting tribute to his uncle, who was assassinated in Dallas in 1963. He emphasized that the center symbolizes the legacy of a leader who sacrificed his life for the nation and criticized the decision as trivializing its meaning.

In addition to Joe Kennedy III, other relatives have also denounced the renaming. Maria Shriver, JFK’s niece, took to social media to describe the move as “beyond comprehension,” questioning how a sitting president could seek to place his name alongside that of her uncle. She labeled the name change as “wild” and inappropriate, raising concerns about its implications for both the memorial and national dignity.

Kerry Kennedy, another member of the Kennedy family, criticized the Trump administration for perceived attacks on artistic freedom and the historical narrative. She asserted that the name of the 47th President should not be equated with that of JFK, underscoring her belief that the alteration undermines important contributions to American history.

Jack Schlossberg, JFK’s grandson, acknowledged the name change in a post while campaigning for a congressional seat in New York. He framed his campaign as a direct contrast to Trump’s ideology, suggesting that their objectives represent values inconsistent with Trump’s agenda.

The Kennedy Center’s name change has sparked contentious debate and has raised the possibility of legal challenges from family members and supporters who argue for the preservation of the center’s original commemorative intent. As discussions continue, the ramifications of this decision are expected to reverberate across the political and cultural landscape.
