Kennett Symphony Announces Name Change
The Kennett Symphony has officially rebranded as the Brandywine Valley Symphony, a name change that reflects the orchestra’s ambition to broaden its recognition and audience reach beyond Kennett Square. This decision has been in discussion for some time, emphasizing the ensemble’s role as a vital cultural institution serving a larger geographic area, including northern Delaware and adjacent counties.
Timothy Blair, the orchestra’s board president, articulated that the new name is intended to resonate with a broader audience. He noted that the Brandywine Valley is a recognized cultural landmark within the United States, popularly associated with the visual arts and rich heritage, particularly the legacy of the renowned Wyeth family. By adopting this new title, the organization aims to enhance its cultural footprint and foster a connection with a wider community.
The Brandywine Valley Symphony has roots dating back to 1940, when it was established as a community orchestra. Over the years, it has evolved into a fully professional ensemble, currently performing a diverse array of concerts each season. The orchestra hosts four orchestral concerts and three chamber music performances annually, highlighting its commitment to providing high-quality musical experiences. Recently, the orchestra expanded its roster to include a total of 52 musicians, further solidifying its professional standing.
The debut performance under the new name is slated for October 12 at the Duffy Arts Center located in Malvern Preparatory School. This concert will feature pianist Anna Shelest performing Edvard Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A Minor, positioning the orchestra to make a memorable first impression in its new identity.
Looking ahead, the Brandywine Valley Symphony is scheduled to perform at the prestigious Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall in October 2026, marking a significant milestone in the orchestra’s history. This performance will showcase Shelest again, this time playing the Schumann Piano Concerto in A Minor. For the orchestra, this will be a momentous event, as it marks its inaugural performance at this iconic venue, long regarded as a hallmark of artistic excellence.
The renaming of the orchestra signifies a strategic shift aimed at enhancing its visibility and ensuring that its rich cultural contributions are acknowledged far and wide.
