Khartoum Hospitals Overwhelmed by Disease Outbreak Amid Ongoing Conflict in Sudan
In recent weeks, Sudan has witnessed a troubling rise in communicable diseases, notably malaria, typhoid, and dengue fever, with over 5,000 reported cases resulting in dozens of fatalities. The ongoing rainy season has created conducive conditions for the proliferation of these illnesses, placing immense strain on the healthcare infrastructure in the region.
At Omdurman Hospital in Khartoum, patients suffering from dengue fever are being treated in makeshift facilities due to a significant backlog in care. Mohammed Siddig, a dengue patient, recounted his experience of navigating the healthcare system; upon feeling symptoms, he was initially evaluated at a nearby health center before being referred to one of Khartoum’s few operational hospitals. His case starkly illustrates the challenges faced by healthcare workers and patients amidst a backdrop of ongoing conflict.
Since April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, resulting in widespread destruction across the region. With nearly half of Khartoum’s hospitals reported as nonoperational, the healthcare system is under extreme duress, exacerbated by the mounting cases of infectious diseases. The impacts of this turmoil have been severe, with the United Nations describing the situation as one of the world’s most serious humanitarian crises.
Despite these adverse conditions, the resilience of the Sudanese people is evident. Families are united in their pursuit of aid, while many are returning to Khartoum to rebuild their lives. Abdul Rahman Abdalla, whose brother is currently receiving treatment at Omdurman Hospital, highlighted the dire situation as he expressed concerns about the lack of improvement in his brother’s health.
As thousands return to the capital, the demand for medical services grows ever higher. Many, like Khartoum North resident Mohamed Ali, are resorting to home remedies alongside traditional treatments, citing the inadequacy of local medical facilities to accommodate their needs. While this resourcefulness speaks to the communities’ ability to navigate adversity, humanitarian organizations have sounded alarms regarding the potential for a further uptick in disease transmission and mortality rates if the overwhelmed healthcare system does not receive urgent support.
Urgent action and access to medical supplies are critical to counteracting the risk of increased fatalities. Collaborative efforts from local and international organizations could play a pivotal role in stabilizing healthcare in Sudan.
