LA Phil reveals schedule for 2026-27 season at Walt Disney Concert Hall.
The Los Angeles Philharmonic has revealed its 2026-27 season lineup at the iconic Walt Disney Concert Hall, showcasing a diverse array of programming that includes world premieres, returning artists, and an extensive commitment to contemporary music. The announcement was made by LA Phil President and CEO Kim Noltemy, highlighting the orchestra’s integral role in the upcoming season.
At the forefront of the season is renowned conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen, who steps into his new role as Creative Director, bringing a fresh vision to the Philharmonic. The esteemed Gustavo Dudamel will also be returning to the Walt Disney Concert Hall for the first time since completing his tenure as Music and Artistic Director, marking a poignant moment in the orchestra’s history. Additionally, Creative Chair John Adams, along with acclaimed artists such as Herbie Hancock and Emmanuelle Haïm, will curate programs that enrich the season’s offerings.
The schedule continues the LA Philharmonic’s longstanding commitment to contemporary compositions, featuring an impressive total of 22 commissioned works. This includes 15 world premieres and three U.S. premieres by a dynamic group of composers, including Gabriella Smith, Hildur Guðnadóttir, Sarah Davachi, and Jlin. This emphasis on new music underscores the orchestra’s dedication to fostering innovation and creativity in the classical music landscape.
Salonen’s inaugural season promises a captivating thematic festival titled “Rituals,” which will explore the multifaceted nature of rituals through both sacred and secular lenses. Among the highlights are the restaging of “One Morning Turns Into an Eternity,” directed by Peter Sellars, as well as performances of iconic works such as Mozart’s “Requiem” and Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring.” An eagerly anticipated U.S. premiere of Smith’s violin concerto “How To Be A Bird” is also slated for the season.
Dudamel’s return includes three distinct programs, featuring a cycle of Beethoven piano concertos alongside the renowned pianist Rudolf Buchbinder. The season also introduces a new co-commission by composer Zosha Di Castri, further enriching the Philharmonic’s presentation of contemporary work.
Additional highlights include a tribute to minimalist composers Steve Reich and Philip Glass, both celebrating their 90th birthdays, and a celebration of John Adams’ 80th birthday. The season will also feature artistic appearances by prominent performers such as Yuja Wang, Hilary Hahn, and Lang Lang, alongside an array of distinguished guest conductors.
The LA Phil Gala will kick off the season on October 1, with concert programming extending through the spring. For tickets and a complete schedule of performances, interested audiences can visit laphil.com.
