Labubu to Star in Upcoming Hollywood Film Created by Top Industry Talent

Labubu, a beloved plush toy characterized by its elfish features and unique snaggle-toothed grin, is set to make its cinematic debut in a film produced by industry stalwarts, as announced by its parent company, Pop Mart. This collaboration marks a significant milestone as Pop Mart joins forces with Sony Pictures Entertainment, which secured the film rights to Labubu in November of the previous year. The anticipated movie is envisioned as a hybrid of live action and CGI, aimed at bringing the whimsical universe of Labubu to audiences worldwide. The announcement was made in Paris, coinciding with a global tour celebrating the 10-year anniversary of Labubu and its associated character line, The Monsters.

At the helm of this project is Paul King, widely recognized for his work on the “Paddington” films and the upcoming adaptation of “Wonka.” King will direct and also take on producing duties. He is collaborating with Steven Levenson, an accomplished screenwriter known for his Tony Award-winning work on “Dear Evan Hansen” and his contributions to Lin-Manuel Miranda’s critically acclaimed film “Tick, Tick… Boom!” Levenson is tasked with co-writing the screenplay, while Kasing Lung, the creative genius behind Labubu and The Monsters, will serve as the executive producer.

Kasing Lung, who hails from Hong Kong but spent much of his childhood in The Netherlands, found inspiration in Nordic folklore—a theme that profoundly influences his character creations. Labubu first came to life through a picture-book series titled “The Monsters Trilogy,” released in 2015, which Lung wrote and illustrated. The transition from storybook to tangible toy became feasible through Lung’s partnership with Hong Kong figurine manufacturer How2Work in 2019, marking the beginning of Labubu’s ascent to global prominence.

As the popularity of Labubu soared—fueled in part by endorsements from numerous celebrities—fans began to queue for hours, sometimes overnight, to purchase the “small monster with high, pointed ears and serrated teeth.” Described by Pop Mart as an “ugly-cute” character, Labubu’s playful demeanor often leads to comical situations where good intentions result in unintended consequences.

Pop Mart and Sony Pictures express their commitment to delivering a unique cinematic experience that combines creative storytelling and artistic vision, aiming to capture the enduring appeal of Labubu not just for fans of the character but for a broader audience as well. The collaboration promises to provide an engaging platform for storytelling and visual artistry that aligns with the expectations of contemporary cinema.
