Larry Summers resigns from OpenAI board following the release of emails linked to Jeffrey Epstein.

Former U.S. Treasury Secretary Larry Summers has announced his resignation from the board of directors of OpenAI, the company renowned for developing the popular artificial intelligence platform, ChatGPT. This decision was confirmed by both Summers’ office and OpenAI on Wednesday.

Summers’ resignation comes in the wake of recent revelations regarding his ongoing association with Jeffrey Epstein, the late financier and convicted sex offender. Emails released earlier showed that Summers maintained a close relationship with Epstein even after the latter’s 2008 conviction for soliciting prostitution from a minor. This disclosure has sparked renewed scrutiny over Summers’ connections with Epstein, who has been a source of extensive controversy linked to his ties with influential figures in various sectors.

In an official statement, OpenAI’s board acknowledged Summers’ decision to step down. They expressed their appreciation for his contributions and the unique viewpoint he offered during his tenure on the board. The board remarked that they respect his choice and are grateful for the time he dedicated to the organization.

The announcement of Summers’ resignation comes shortly after he indicated his intention to scale back his public engagements. In a separate statement released by his spokesperson, he explained, “In line with my announcement to step away from my public commitments, I have also decided to resign from the board of OpenAI.” He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and expressed enthusiasm about the potential of OpenAI, emphasizing his eagerness to observe the company’s future progress.

Summers joined the OpenAI board in November 2023 as part of a strategic initiative aimed at stabilizing the organization and reinstating CEO Sam Altman after a tumultuous period involving Altman’s brief dismissal by board members. Summers’ experience and background, including his tenure as president of Harvard University, were seen as pivotal during a time of uncertainty for the nonprofit.

The fallout from Epstein’s life and connections continues to permeate discussions about power dynamics and accountability among America’s elite. Epstein’s tragic end, coupled with his criminal history, has left a lasting mark on those associated with him, leading to ongoing investigations and societal debates about the implications of such associations in professional and personal spheres.
