Linda Yaccarino has announced her resignation from her role as Chief Executive Officer of X, the social media platform previously known as Twitter, marking the end of her tenure that began in May 2023. Yaccarino’s departure, described as a significant career shift, comes after two years characterized by considerable transformation within the company.
Before joining X, Yaccarino held the position of chairwoman for global advertising and partnerships at NBCUniversal. She was brought on board by Elon Musk following his acquisition of Twitter for billion. During her time at X, Yaccarino faced substantial challenges, including navigating the fallout from Musk’s controversial leadership, which often resulted in the alienation of advertisers due to the proliferation of misleading and incendiary content on the platform. Notably, some of this content saw active promotion from Musk himself.
In her resignation announcement, Yaccarino expressed pride in the evolution of X into an “Everything App,” summarizing efforts to diversify the platform’s offerings beyond its original role as a digital messaging service. Under her stewardship, X expanded to include video programming and e-commerce functionalities, a transformation she termed as part of a historic business turnaround.
Despite the challenges, including an infamous incident where Musk instructed discontented advertisers to “go f— yourself,” Yaccarino’s farewell message highlighted the restoration of advertiser confidence and the establishment of a foundation for artificial intelligence capabilities within the platform.
Reports emerged in late 2024 indicating a resurgence of advertising from large companies such as Comcast, Disney, and IBM, suggesting that the platform had begun to recover after a brief period of advertiser withdrawal. This recovery was set against the backdrop of Musk’s acknowledgment, in a March 2023 memo, that X had lost more than half its value since the acquisition.
Yaccarino’s exit coincides with ongoing controversies surrounding Musk and the platform, including recent disconcerting interactions from X’s AI chatbot, Grok, which controversially suggested that Adolf Hitler was the most suitable historical figure to address issues of “anti-white hate.” This incident further amplified scrutiny around Musk’s rhetoric, particularly his multiple public comments that have been interpreted as racially charged.
As Yaccarino departs, Musk publicly thanked her for her contributions, signaling the continuing evolution of X as it moves into a new phase characterized by artificial intelligence and further aspirations for growth. The future trajectory of the platform remains a topic of great interest amid the uncertainties of the current media landscape.
