Liquor Store Owner in Westchester Arrested Following Discovery of Guns and Cocaine in Establishment
In a recent operation that highlights the ongoing issues of drug-related crime and firearm possession, authorities have arrested the owner of Amir’s Wine & Spirits, a liquor store located in New Rochelle, Westchester County. The individual, identified as 28-year-old Amir Babiker, was apprehended over the weekend following a police investigation prompted by a tip-off alleging that he was selling cocaine from the premises.
On October 24, law enforcement officials executed a search warrant at the establishment. During this operation, detectives uncovered a 9mm semi-automatic pistol, a .32-caliber derringer, and approximately 21 grams of cocaine, which was reportedly packaged for distribution. The discovery of the firearms and drugs led to several charges against Babiker, including felony criminal possession of a controlled substance and criminal possession of a firearm. Additionally, he faces charges of criminal possession of stolen property and misdemeanor criminal possession of a controlled substance.
According to Captain J. Collins Coyne of the New Rochelle Police Department, the derringer, which is a type of handgun, had previously been reported stolen in Columbia County in 2014. This aspect of the investigation raises further questions about the sources and circulation of illegal firearms within the community.
Babiker’s felony drug charge could result in a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison. However, following his arraignment on Saturday, he was released under circumstances not disclosed by the authorities. This incident underscores ongoing concerns related to the intersection of illegal drug dealing and gun violence, issues that have increasingly become focal points for law enforcement agencies across the nation.
The case continues to develop, and authorities are likely to conduct further investigations to determine the extent of Babiker’s alleged activities. The presence of both drugs and firearms raises significant alarm for public safety in New Rochelle, prompting community leaders and law enforcement to reinforce their commitment to combating crime in the area. As the situation unfolds, residents remain vigilant, aware of the complexities surrounding issues of substance abuse and gun control that are prevalent in many urban environments today.
