Local farm marks 5 years of supplying fresh produce to Orange County food bank.

Volunteers recently gathered at Harvest Solutions Farm in Irvine, California, to commemorate the farm’s fifth anniversary by participating in a bell pepper harvesting event. This community initiative is a partnership involving the Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County, the University of California South Coast Research & Extension Center, and Solutions for Urban Agriculture.

Harvest Solutions Farm operates year-round, focusing on cultivating a variety of fruits and vegetables. To date, the farm has contributed over 9 million pounds of fresh produce to the Second Harvest Food Bank, which is dedicated to addressing food insecurity in the region. Each month, the food bank supports approximately 400,000 clients, meeting a significant need for nutritious food in the area.

The farm is an exceptional example of a food bank leveraging agricultural resources, setting itself apart as one of the few nationwide that integrates farming with food distribution at such a scale. Volunteers play a crucial role in this operation, helping to ensure that fresh vegetables reach those in need. On the day of the anniversary celebration, volunteers filled their buckets with an impressive yield of bell peppers, showcasing the hard work and commitment of the community.

The variety of crops grown on the farm includes several types of squash, zucchini, watermelon, broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower, highlighting the farm’s ability to produce diverse food options throughout the year. Hannah Ortiz, agriculture manager at Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County, emphasized the significance of this project. Ortiz stated that volunteering at the farm offers individuals a rare opportunity to reconnect with agriculture and understand the food system, which many people may feel distant from in today’s urbanized society.
