Lola Young cancels New Jersey concert at the last minute, citing mental health reasons.

Lola Young, a rising 24-year-old British singer known for her track “Messy,” has withdrawn from a highly anticipated concert scheduled for Friday at the Prudential Center in New Jersey. The decision was made by her manager, Nick Shymansky, who previously worked with iconic artist Amy Winehouse. Shymansky cited a “sensitive matter” involving Young’s mental health as the reason for her absence from the star-studded event, part of Audacy’s We Can Survive concert series, which featured performers such as Ed Sheeran and the Goo Goo Dolls.

In a post shared on Young’s Instagram Story, Shymansky emphasized the importance of prioritizing her well-being. He noted that there are times when protective measures are necessary to ensure Young’s safety, acknowledging her openness about her mental health struggles. He expressed regret for any inconvenience caused by her absence, highlighting Young’s dedication to her fans and her performances.

Young has been candid about her mental health journey, disclosing her diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder in 2019. She shared her experience of grappling with the condition in a post from 2022, stating that it took considerable time for her to accept this aspect of her life. The singer described her mental health challenges, revealing that while she experiences intense highs and lows, her condition does not define her. Instead, she considers it a “superpower” that enhances her creativity.

Schizoaffective disorder can manifest through a combination of symptoms associated with schizophrenia and mood disorders, such as depression and mania, according to information provided by health professionals at the Cleveland Clinic. This complex condition often requires substantial support and understanding from both the individual and their loved ones.

Despite her struggles, Young has recently reported feeling exceptionally positive about her life and career. In an interview earlier this month with CBS News, she described her current emotional state as the happiest she has ever been. This optimistic outlook contrasts with the difficulties she faced in the past, underlining her resilience and determination to succeed in the music industry.

As discussions around mental health continue to gain prominence, the challenges faced by artists like Lola Young serve as a reminder of the importance of mental wellness in the high-pressure world of entertainment. Her story not only highlights the need for supportive environments but also encourages others experiencing similar struggles to seek help and prioritize their mental health.
