Long Island man charged in fatal DWI crash has died in hospital.

A tragic incident involving a Long Island man, Joseph Curto, has taken a fatal turn following a deadly drunk driving crash earlier this month. Authorities reported on Tuesday that Curto, aged 54, succumbed to his injuries in a Long Island hospital, where he had been receiving treatment since the July 15 accident.

Curto had been identified as the driver responsible for a head-on collision in Bethpage that resulted in the death of 40-year-old Cindy Saborio. Reports indicate that Curto was operating his 2013 Honda Pilot northbound on Seamans Neck Road when he collided with Saborio’s 2008 Honda Accord. Immediate investigations established that Curto was driving under the influence at the time of the incident.

Saborio, a resident of Wantagh, was tragically pronounced dead at the scene. Eyewitness accounts describe a harrowing scene where attempts to remove her from her vehicle were met with the grim reality that she had no pulse. Community members expressed shock and disbelief at the devastating consequences of the crash.

Following the incident, Curto was hospitalised in critical condition. Police officials stated that his planned arraignment would be postponed until he was medically fit to attend. However, the situation took a fatal turn when Curto passed away on Saturday, leaving behind a complex legal situation that concluded with his death.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns about road safety in Long Island, a region that has garnered attention for its high rates of traffic fatalities. According to data from 2022, Long Island was the deadliest area in New York State in terms of car crashes, with Nassau County reporting 81 fatalities and Suffolk County recording 164. The overall rate of fatal car crashes on Long Island stood at 8.4 deaths per 100,000 people, aligning closely with the state median, while New York City reported a significantly lower rate of 2.9 fatalities per 100,000 population.

Authorities are continuing to address the factors contributing to these alarming statistics, particularly as they pertain to driving under the influence. This tragic collision serves as a somber reminder of the dangers present on the road and the profound impacts such incidents can have on families and communities alike.
