Long Island man found guilty of murdering rival at housing complex in 2023.
A Long Island man has been found guilty of second-degree murder in connection with a fatal shooting that transpired outside a housing complex in Long Beach. Ronnie Sutton, 52, was convicted on Tuesday for the April 7, 2023, killing of 33-year-old Shawn Usher, following a series of confrontations between the two men. This decision was announced by Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly on Wednesday.
Authorities stated that both Sutton and Usher were frequent visitors to the Channel Park Homes, a housing complex approximately seven miles southeast of Kennedy Airport in New York. The two were known to have a tumultuous relationship characterized by frequent arguments and physical altercations. On the night of the shooting, just before 10:30 PM, the pair engaged in yet another dispute. However, this time, the encounter took a deadly turn when Sutton produced a firearm and fired at Usher multiple times, hitting him six times before physically assaulting him further.
Donnelly emphasized the premeditated nature of Sutton’s actions, indicating that he had numerous opportunities to disengage from the conflict but instead chose to escalate it violently. This behavior, she stated, reflects a profound disregard for human life.
Following the incident, Sutton disposed of the weapon in a nearby bush, which was subsequently recovered by Long Beach police shortly thereafter. He was apprehended less than two weeks post-incident and has remained in custody since that time. Sutton’s sentencing hearing is slated for October 3, 2023, where he could face a sentence ranging from 40 years to life in prison.
The repercussions of this violent act extend beyond the immediate incident. Family members of the victim expressed their anguish over the loss, highlighting the profound impacts on their lives. Usher’s aunt lamented that her family would now navigate life without him, emphasizing the heart-wrenching absence that the tragedy has caused.
As the case draws to a conclusion, it serves as a somber reminder of the consequences of unchecked violence and the ripple effect such tragedies have on families and communities alike. The community is now left to reflect on the events that transpired and the changes needed to prevent future occurrences of such catastrophic violence.
