A Long Island man faces serious legal consequences following an indictment on multiple charges, including assault and grand larceny, after a dramatic encounter with law enforcement that left two officers injured. Jeffrey Fairweather, a 43-year-old resident of Nassau County, was allegedly involved in an incident that began on September 2, when Suffolk County detectives noticed him entering the parking lot of a Medford car dealership. He was reportedly seen leaving the premises with parts stolen from a vehicle, specifically a 2023 Hyundai Palisade.
According to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, Fairweather took a bumper, two headlights, and a front grille from the Hyundai, which was parked for sale at the dealership. When approached by two officers who instructed him to stop, Fairweather allegedly disregarded their commands and attempted to flee the scene in his vehicle.
In the course of his escape, Fairweather crashed head-on into an unmarked police vehicle, causing significant damage and injuring an officer in the process. The officer suffered injuries to the neck, back, and foot. Following the collision, Fairweather exited the vehicle and fled the scene on foot. Approximately two hours later, law enforcement successfully located him near a storage facility in the nearby hamlet of Holbrook. However, Fairweather once again attempted to evade capture on foot.
During the ensuing chase, a Suffolk County police officer fell and sustained knee injuries along with a cut on his elbow, requiring several stitches to treat. Despite Fairweather’s repeated efforts to escape, law enforcement ultimately apprehended him.
District Attorney Raymond Tierney commented on the situation, highlighting the risks law enforcement officers take daily to ensure community safety. He expressed concern over Fairweather’s actions, which endangered the very individuals tasked with protecting the public.
Fairweather appeared in court on Thursday, where he was ordered to be held on a bond of 0,000. He is scheduled to return to court on November 13. The indictment marks a significant escalation in the legal proceedings against Fairweather, who now faces serious felony charges stemming from the incident.
