Long Island man indicted for DWI crash involving 6 vehicles that injured a couple and two teenagers.
A Long Island man has been indicted following a high-speed crash that resulted in significant injuries to an elderly couple. Miandad Khan, 37, of Dix Hills, faces multiple charges, including aggravated vehicular assault, stemming from an incident that occurred in Deer Park on Saturday afternoon, according to a statement from Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney.
The crash transpired around 2:30 p.m. when Khan, allegedly under the influence of drugs, was driving his silver 2016 Mercedes-Benz E350. Witnesses reported that he was traveling in the wrong direction on Deer Park Avenue when he collided with a white 2020 Acura at the intersection of Deer Park Avenue and Jacqueline Way, subsequently fleeing the scene of the accident.
While evading authorities, Khan reportedly veered over the center median and into oncoming traffic, increasing his speed as he drove against the flow. Court documents reveal that he struck a second vehicle, a Honda SUV occupied by two teenage brothers, causing that vehicle to spin out of control. Khan continued to drive recklessly, ultimately crashing head-on into a Toyota RAV4 transporting a couple, both of whom are in their 70s.
The severity of the collision resulted in both vehicles being propelled into others, creating a chaotic scene reminiscent of a demolition derby, as described by prosecutors. Emergency responders were required to extract the elderly couple from their vehicle. They were later transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip, where both underwent surgery for significant facial and spinal injuries. The teenage brothers and the driver of the Acura also sought treatment at the hospital for various injuries.
In addition to the personal injuries, several other vehicles were damaged by debris from the collision. Following the incident, Khan was arraigned on multiple felony and misdemeanor charges, which include driving while impaired by drugs, excessive speeding, and leaving the scene of an accident without providing information.
Tierney emphasized the seriousness of the incident, highlighting the dangers posed by impaired driving. Khan has been ordered to remain in custody on a cash bond of 0,000 while awaiting trial, with his next court appearance scheduled for October 1. This case underscores the commitment of local authorities to hold dangerous drivers accountable and to protect public safety on the roadways.
