Long Island man indicted for raping 74-year-old woman during a home invasion.

A Long Island man has been indicted on serious charges stemming from an alleged home invasion and sexual assault of a 74-year-old woman in Holbrook, New York. The incident, which has shocked the local community, was reported to have occurred in the early morning hours of October 24, 2023. The individual accused in this case, 29-year-old Jawarren Booker from Ridge, was taken into custody on October 28, just days following the event.

According to authorities, Booker is alleged to have entered the victim’s apartment by way of a window before committing the assault. The Suffolk County Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina categorized the crime as one that profoundly impacts community trust and raises significant concerns about personal safety. Disturbingly, it is reported that the suspect physically restrained the victim before violently assaulting her, issuing threats to dissuade her from contacting law enforcement.

In a press conference, Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney provided further insights into the grave nature of the indictment, which includes first-degree burglary and first-degree rape, both classified as violent felonies. The district attorney called this act “absolutely appalling” and a violation of the most fundamental rights to safety and security in one’s home.

The victim, who lives alone, reportedly heard suspicious noises in her bedroom and went to investigate, only to encounter Booker, who was dressed in dark clothing that obscured his identity save for his eyes. Post-assault, the victim bravely reached out for help immediately after the suspect fled the scene. She notified her neighbors, who promptly dialed 911. Emergency responders transported her to a nearby hospital, where a forensic examination was conducted, and she received treatment for sustaining injuries during the assault.

Investigators later located Booker in the Bronx following a comprehensive investigation. He was arraigned on the indictment on October 30 and is currently being held without bail, according to legal documents. He is scheduled to return to court on November 19, 2023. If convicted, Booker faces a potential sentence of up to 25 years in prison.

This case highlights the essential need for community vigilance and support systems for victims of crime, particularly vulnerable individuals such as the elderly. The ongoing legal proceedings will be closely monitored as the community seeks justice and answers in the wake of this alarming incident.
