Long Island man sentenced for severely assaulting his girlfriend’s 2-year-old daughter.

A Long Island man has received a substantial prison sentence of 23 years as a result of his conviction for the brutal assault of his girlfriend’s 2-year-old daughter. This sentencing decision was announced by the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office on Thursday. The 33-year-old defendant, who remains unnamed to protect the child’s identity, was charged with assault after the toddler suffered severe injuries while in his care.

The incident took place early last year when the girl’s mother left her in the defendant’s custody while she went to work. Upon returning home on February 19, 2024, the mother noticed significant bruising on her daughter’s body. The alarming situation escalated the following day when she discovered a notable bruise on the child’s face. Disturbingly, the toddler was also vomiting and appeared unable to stand or respond to her mother, indicating a dire health crisis.

In light of these concerning symptoms, the mother quickly transported her daughter to a local hospital. Medical professionals assessed the child’s condition and determined that she was critically ill. She was subsequently transferred to a pediatric acute care facility, where she underwent emergency surgery to repair a life-threatening injury to her small intestine, an injury attributed to severe blunt force trauma.

On February 28, 2025, a jury found the defendant guilty of first-degree assault and related charges, leading to his sentencing. Following the verdict, District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney expressed outrage at the incident, highlighting the vulnerability of the young victim and the profound negligence exhibited by the defendant. Tierney emphasized that no parent should encounter such a distressing situation upon returning home, and no child should suffer such appalling abuse.

In addition to his prison sentence, the defendant will face five years of post-release supervision. This case underscores the critical importance of safeguarding children from harm and serves as a stark reminder of the consequences for those who perpetrate violence against the most defenseless members of society. The legal system’s response aims to provide justice for victims and send a clear message against child abuse.
