Long Island man sentenced to 89 years for raping his 5-year-old daughter and 12-year-old half-sister.

A Long Island man has been convicted for the sexual assault of two young family members, who were ages 5 and 12 at the time of the offenses. The 38-year-old resident of Patchogue, whose identity has been withheld to protect the victims, is facing a potential sentence of nearly 90 years in prison, according to a statement from Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney.

The conviction, which came on Monday, included multiple serious charges such as first-degree rape, sexual abuse, and endangering the welfare of a child. The court heard evidence indicating that the man began abusing his daughter in September 2013, when she was only 5 years old and attending kindergarten. The abuse reportedly continued for several years as the defendant instilled fear in the child, suggesting that speaking out would destroy their family.

The abuse escalated, culminating in a particularly harrowing incident shortly before the victim’s 14th birthday, during which the man allegedly entered her bedroom, assaulted her, and warned her to remain silent about the abuse when she attempted to speak to her mother.

In a separate case, on August 29, 2021, the man sexually assaulted his 15-year-old half-sister while she was visiting his home from Manhattan, where she resides with her father. Prosecutors reported that while the teenager was sleeping on an air mattress, the defendant crawled next to her and, using a leg lock to restrain her, proceeded to sexually assault her.

The incident was reported by the teenager, which led to an investigation into the man’s actions. District Attorney Tierney remarked on the profound betrayal of trust that the defendant exhibited toward the young victims. He praised the courage of both survivors for coming forward to testify, emphasizing that their bravery played a critical role in ensuring that the perpetrator would face justice.

The man is scheduled for sentencing on January 7, 2024, where he faces a maximum sentence of 89 years in prison. The case highlights the importance of supporting survivors of abuse and the justice system’s role in holding offenders accountable for their actions, particularly when the victims are children.

As this case unfolds, it underscores the ongoing challenges surrounding child abuse and the critical need for awareness and prevention programs to protect vulnerable individuals within families.
