Long Island teenager stabs grandmother 35 times during argument over laptop, according to authorities.

A Long Island teenager has been indicted on multiple charges, including murder and attempted murder, following a tragic incident that resulted in the death of his grandmother and severe injuries to his mother. The Suffolk County District Attorney’s office announced the indictment of the 15-year-old defendant, whose identity remains undisclosed due to his age. This hearing took place earlier this week in a case described by DA Raymond A. Tierney as one that has wrought devastation upon the family involved.

According to investigators, the incident unfolded on the evening of April 7 inside the family home in Selden. Tensions escalated during an argument between the teenager and his mother, 36-year-old Vanessa Chendemi, regarding his absence from school. During the confrontation, the boy’s grandmother, 56-year-old Concetta Chendemi, advised her daughter to discipline the teen by confiscating his laptop. This suggestion allegedly incited the teenager to violence.

Reports indicate that the youth proceeded to stab his grandmother more than 35 times with a kitchen knife, resulting in her immediate death at the scene. Following the attack on his grandmother, the teenager is accused of turning his aggression toward his mother. Prosecutors assert that the mother fell to the ground and pretended to be unconscious in a desperate attempt to evade further violence. Despite her efforts, the mother sustained multiple stab wounds, including injuries to her face, arm, neck, and back, prompting her emergency transport to a local hospital where she remains under care.

In the wake of this harrowing incident, DA Tierney expressed concern over the implications of familial violence, emphasizing the deep trauma created by such actions. The defendant was ordered to be held without bail during his arraignment by Judge Karen Kerr, who pointed out the severity of the case. He faces a possible life sentence if convicted of the most serious charge against him.

The case’s next court appearance is scheduled for May 21, as the legal process begins to address the grave circumstances surrounding this family tragedy. The incident highlights not only the violence that can occur within familial settings but also the urgent need for dialogue and intervention regarding youth behavior and mental health issues. Law enforcement officials continue to investigate and seek justice for the victims impacted by this horrific event.
