Long Island woman receives sentence for attempted murder using minivan in parking lot dispute.

A Long Island woman has been sentenced to seven years in prison following a violent incident involving a 63-year-old victim. The ruling, announced by the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, stems from an altercation that occurred nearly a year ago in a shopping center parking lot.

Philomena Mistretta, aged 51 and resident of Coram, engaged in a dispute with the victim outside Miracle Plaza, a retail shopping center located off Montauk Highway in Bellport. On October 26, 2024, during the early hours of the morning, the confrontation escalated from a verbal disagreement to physical aggression.

According to prosecutors, Mistretta was behind the wheel of a 2004 white Toyota Sienna when she exited the vehicle to engage in a physical confrontation with the woman. After this altercation, she returned to her minivan and, in a shocking act of aggression, reversed the vehicle, turned it towards the victim, and drove over her, dragging the woman for a short distance before coming to a stop.

Emergency responders transported the victim to Long Island Community Hospital in Patchogue, where she was treated for significant injuries, including lacerations to the skull. Miraculously, she survived the encounter. Law enforcement arrested Mistretta at the scene.

Following her arrest, Mistretta faced multiple felony charges, including attempted murder and assault. Law enforcement officials characterized her actions as indicative of a “shocking disregard for human life.” In November of the same year, she was indicted on these charges and subsequently pleaded guilty to all counts in the previous month.

Mistretta’s sentence, handed down on a recent Tuesday, comprises seven years of incarceration, followed by five years of supervised release after serving her time. District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney commented on the case, emphasizing that a minor disagreement should never have escalated to such extreme violence. He remarked that Mistretta made a conscious and harmful decision, and the sentence reflects the seriousness of her actions.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of escalating conflicts and the necessity of resolving disputes peacefully. The case also raises broader questions about public safety and the responsibilities individuals hold for their actions in moments of anger.
