M. Night Shyamalan praises an iconic coffee shop in Philadelphia.

M. Night Shyamalan, an acclaimed filmmaker known for his contributions to the horror genre, made an unanticipated visit to Philadelphia’s Harrowgate neighborhood this past Sunday. However, rather than scouting locations for his next film project, Shyamalan took the opportunity to enjoy the unique offerings of the local coffee scene. Accompanied by his wife, Bhavna, he paid a visit to Càphê Roasters, the city’s pioneering Vietnamese coffee roastery.

During his time at Càphê Roasters, located at the intersection of J Street and Kensington Avenue, Shyamalan rated the establishment a perfect 10/10 in a brief video shared via the coffee shop’s Instagram account. He expressed his satisfaction with the atmosphere, food, and drinks, underscoring his affinity for high-quality local offerings.

Shyamalan, who spent his formative years in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, is well-recognized for his diverse body of work that includes 16 feature films, ranging from the iconic “The Sixth Sense” to the less acclaimed “The Last Airbender.” While the filmmaker has stirred a variety of opinions among local film enthusiasts, his deep-rooted appreciation for his hometown, including its thriving coffee shops, remains evident.

His visit to Càphê Roasters was not merely a leisurely outing; it was a meaningful occasion as the coffee shop supports the 12 Plus nonprofit. This organization, co-founded by Càphê Roasters co-owner Raymond John, is dedicated to helping high school students prepare for college and career opportunities. The collaboration reflects Shyamalan’s longstanding commitment to promoting education and mentorship through the M. Night Shyamalan Foundation.

Owner Thu Pham shared that Shyamalan visited with Bhavna and leaders from 12 Plus prior to a fundraising dinner. Though initially pressed for time, they made the most of their visit by ordering food in addition to their drinks. Pham prepared a gluten-free porridge for Bhavna and a fried chicken bánh mì sandwich for Shyamalan, alongside a selection of other Vietnamese dishes. The group ordered a total of 12 drinks, emphasizing Shyamalan’s preference for the hot Vietnamese latte.

Càphê Roasters, which opened in 2021, has distinguished itself as a prominent establishment in Philadelphia’s coffee landscape. By reclaiming rich robusta beans to create a unique coffee experience, Pham and John are also fostering a social hub that supports immigrants from various backgrounds. Their commitment to hiring local graduates and students from the 12 Plus program reflects their dedication to community empowerment.

With its growing accolades, Càphê Roasters has recently garnered national recognition, including being named a 2025 James Beard semifinalist, and is also cited in the New York Times list of prominent Philadelphia restaurants. The recent visit from Shyamalan further elevates the café’s profile, marking a significant moment in its journey.

Shyamalan’s spontaneous visit not only underscores his connection to the city but also highlights the thriving culture and community at local establishments like Càphê Roasters.
