Man, 25, arrested in connection with ongoing street rapes in the Bronx targeting a 25-year-old woman.
A 26-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the rape of a 25-year-old woman in the Bronx, an incident that has raised concerns about safety in the area. Zion Exum was taken into custody on Saturday following an investigation into the September 13 assault that occurred around 4:05 a.m. near East 212th Street and Paulding Avenue in the Williamsbridge neighborhood.
According to law enforcement officials, Exum approached the victim under the pretext of engaging her in conversation before turning violent. It is alleged that he wrapped his arms around her, forcibly wrestled her to the ground, and subsequently assaulted her. Following the attack, Exum fled the scene heading south along Paulding Avenue.
Exum was described by police as wearing a blue jacket over a black hoodie, along with black jogging pants and black sneakers. The prompt response of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) saw the victim transported to Weill Cornell Medical Center, where she was treated and reported to be in stable condition.
Investigators revealed that Exum’s place of residence is in Brooklyn. Following his arrest, his arraignment in Bronx Criminal Court was set to occur later that evening. This incident comes on the heels of two other reported street rapes in the Bronx, including a notable case where a victim was attacked while sitting on a park bench, highlighting a disturbing pattern of violence against women in public spaces.
The Bronx precinct has increased its patrols in light of these incidents, aiming to enhance safety and reassure community members. Local authorities are urging anyone with additional information regarding these crimes to come forward, emphasizing their commitment to addressing sexual violence and ensuring justice for victims.
This recent surge in reported rapes has ignited discussions about public safety measures and the need for community awareness and vigilance. As this case progresses through the legal system, the community remains alert and supportive of efforts to prevent such heinous acts in the future. The investigation is ongoing, and police continue to seek any witnesses to the crime.
