Man arrested for allegedly attacking homeless individuals sleeping on a sidewalk in Center City, as captured in a social media video.
A 27-year-old man from Philadelphia has been apprehended following his alleged involvement in a social media video that depicts violent incidents involving individuals sleeping on the streets of Center City during the Fourth of July holiday. Naeem Morgan now faces multiple charges, including possession of instruments of crime, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, disorderly conduct, and harassment, according to local police authorities.
The incident came to light when the Philadelphia Police Department was alerted to a video circulating on social media that captured Morgan allegedly assaulting six homeless individuals. The assaults were reported to have taken place on the night of July 4, prompting a swift investigation by law enforcement. Upon reviewing the footage and gathering additional video evidence from the vicinity, detectives identified Morgan as the suspect.
Morgan was taken into custody on Monday, police officials confirmed. The video, which has not been officially released by the police but is still accessible online, portrays Morgan, dressed in a white T-shirt and dark pants, walking with a group of at least five other individuals near the Pennsylvania Convention Center.
In the footage, Morgan is seen approaching a sleeping individual, taking a water bottle from the ground, and throwing it at the person. He then kicks the victim in the head. The video continues to show Morgan attacking others in a similar fashion while members of his group record the events with their smartphones, laughing and reacting to the incidents.
In one disturbing sequence, Morgan is observed slamming a backpack into the face of another sleeping person. Additionally, he is captured on video pulling a blanket away from a woman, exposing her body, and shouting at her to “get a job.”
This troubling episode underscores ongoing concerns regarding the treatment of the homeless population in urban areas, sparking discussions about societal attitudes toward individuals experiencing homelessness. As this case develops and legal proceedings unfold, it reflects broader societal challenges that require attention and action.
