Man arrested for fatal subway stabbing in Manhattan following dispute over shoes.
A suspect has been taken into custody in connection with a fatal stabbing incident that occurred on a subway train in Manhattan. The event unfolded during a confrontation over a seemingly minor disagreement, specifically an allegation that the suspect had stepped on the victim’s shoes. The New York Police Department reported the arrest of 46-year-old Luis Jose-Duarte for manslaughter, in relation to the death of 38-year-old John Sheldon.
The incident took place on a downtown No. 5 train at approximately 8:25 a.m. on Friday. Upon boarding the train at Grand Central Station, Jose-Duarte allegedly stepped on Sheldon’s shoes, prompting an argument between the two men. According to police, during the altercation, Jose-Duarte stabbed Sheldon in the upper body while the train continued its route downtown.
Upon reaching the City Hall subway stop, both men exited the train. Reports indicate that Sheldon continued to follow Jose-Duarte. At that moment, it is alleged that Jose-Duarte turned back and stabbed Sheldon again, this time a second time as they moved onto the platform.
Sheldon sustained critical injuries and was transported to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Family members expressed their shock and grief, highlighting the increasing violence observed in public transportation settings, with Sheldon’s mother, Monica John, describing the incident as appalling.
Law enforcement officials revealed that Sheldon had a history of mental health issues and had been arrested more than 60 times, with his most recent arrest occurring on February 6 for allegedly assaulting a police officer while attempting to sell MetroCard turnstile swipes.
Jose-Duarte, a resident of the Bronx, remains in police custody following his arrest. The New York Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident, underscoring the growing concerns regarding safety in the city’s subway system. Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior as they work to address violence in public spaces.
