Man charged with killing woman who intervened in argument outside 7-Eleven in Center City, according to police reports.

A tragic incident in Center City, Philadelphia, has led to a murder charge against a homeless man, John Kelly, following the fatal shooting of Lauren Jardine, a 33-year-old woman who attempted to intervene in an argument. The altercation occurred outside a 7-Eleven at 12th and Chestnut Streets around 5:45 p.m. on a Friday evening, according to statements from the Philadelphia police.

The confrontation began when Kelly was arguing with his girlfriend. As the dispute escalated, Jardine, who was passing by, attempted to intervene. The Assistant District Attorney, Jeff Hojnowski, reported that an argument ensued between Kelly and Jardine, during which it was revealed that Jardine was illegally carrying a firearm. A struggle over the weapon broke out, culminating in Kelly allegedly gaining control and firing the gun multiple times.

Bystander video footage obtained from the scene showed the chaotic interaction, in which Kelly could be seen wrestling with Jardine before ultimately shooting her. After the shooting, Jardine collapsed, and Kelly reportedly attempted to grab an item from her hand, insisting that she “put it down” before firing another shot, which investigators believe was an effort to retrieve his screwdriver. In a subsequent act, Kelly discarded the gun into a nearby mailbox.

Jardine sustained gunshot wounds to her lower back and hand, and despite immediate medical attention at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, she succumbed to her injuries shortly thereafter. Kelly was apprehended near the scene and now faces charges of murder, illegal gun possession, and related offenses. As of now, it remains uncertain whether he has retained legal representation.

Assistant District Attorney Hojnowski asserts that Jardine did not know either Kelly or his girlfriend, and the motivation behind her decision to intervene remains unclear. According to her mother, Ada Jardine, this act of courage was consistent with her daughter’s character, as she often stood up for individuals in difficulty, regardless of familiarity.

Lauren Jardine was a resident of West Philadelphia and had been making significant strides in her life, having recently obtained her GED after overcoming various challenges, including previous episodes of incarceration and gun violence. She was actively seeking employment and had attended a job fair on the day of the incident, preparing to submit multiple job applications.

John Kelly, 45, has a history of incarceration related to a variety of offenses, including drug possession and robbery. In a recent incident prior to the shooting, he faced charges for harassment and making terroristic threats against the manager of a different 7-Eleven, demonstrating a pattern of disruptive behavior.

This incident underscores ongoing concerns regarding public safety and gun violence, especially in urban areas where confrontations can escalate unchecked, resulting in tragic outcomes. The investigation is ongoing, and the community is left grappling with the loss of a life cut short due to a moment of intervention.
