Man dies after tractor-trailer collides with disabled minivan on RFK Bridge.
A tragic incident on the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge on Randall’s Island claimed the life of a 23-year-old man early Tuesday morning, resulting in significant traffic disruptions for commuters. The victim, Abdulmateen Fagbemi, was in the process of addressing a mechanical issue with his minivan when the fatal collision occurred.
According to authorities, Fagbemi’s minivan became disabled in a center lane of the Manhattan-bound side of the bridge at approximately 3:30 AM. While he was inspecting the vehicle under the hood, a tractor-trailer struck the minivan from behind around 3:45 AM. The impact forced the minivan forward, causing Fagbemi to be knocked under the vehicle as it skidded into an adjacent lane.
Emergency responders swiftly transported Fagbemi to Lincoln Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries approximately one hour later. Residing in Irvington, New Jersey, Fagbemi’s untimely death has shocked the local community and raised safety concerns regarding roadside emergencies.
A preliminary investigation led by MTA police, in collaboration with the NYPD’s Collision Investigation squad, determined that there was no immediate indication of criminal wrongdoing in the collision, though the investigation is ongoing. The authorities are expected to analyze various factors, including the visibility conditions and the speed of the tractor-trailer, to provide a comprehensive understanding of the events leading up to the crash.
The collision resulted in extensive closures on the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge, with all Manhattan and Bronx-bound lanes being shut down to facilitate the investigation until around 5:21 AM. A single lane was intermittently reopened thereafter, but full access to the bridge was not restored until approximately 8:28 AM. As a result, the traffic situation became increasingly congested, with significant ripple effects felt on the Grand Central Parkway in Queens, creating a substantial backlog for early morning commuters.
The incident underscores the dangers faced by motorists in emergency situations and raises questions about the adequacy of roadside safety protocols. Authorities and safety advocates alike may look to this incident to spur discussions around improving safety measures for stranded drivers and ensuring that appropriate response protocols are in place.
