Man fatally shot ex-girlfriend outside her apartment in Long Island during a dispute over debt.

A 40-year-old man from Long Island, James Quininchetta, has been indicted for the murder of his ex-girlfriend, Rebecca Roth, following a violent confrontation that reportedly stemmed from a financial dispute. The incident, characterized by authorities as a senseless act of violence, occurred outside Roth’s apartment complex in Moriches, New York, in the early hours of June 6.

According to Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney, Quininchetta allegedly approached Roth around midnight after arriving at her residence through a rideshare service. The confrontation began over what has been described as a minor financial disagreement, but quickly escalated. Prosecutors claim that when Roth refused to repay the money he alleged she owed him, Quininchetta responded by using a .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun. It is reported that he fired at Roth multiple times as she sat in her parked vehicle, delivering seven shots in total.

Following the shooting, Quininchetta is said to have discarded the firearm and ammunition before utilizing the rideshare service to return home. Law enforcement officials from the Suffolk County Police Department responded to the scene and managed to recover the suspected murder weapon near a pickup truck located in a nearby parking lot. In a subsequent search, a K-9 unit discovered a fanny pack filled with ammunition in a wooded area adjacent to the apartment complex. Additional evidence, including spent shell casings, was also collected at the scene.

A forensic examination conducted on Roth revealed that she suffered multiple gunshot wounds to her torso, leading to her untimely death. Approximately 24 hours after the incident, Quininchetta surrendered to law enforcement and was taken into custody.

He was arraigned on charges of murder and possession of a weapon on Wednesday, pledding not guilty to the charges. Quininchetta has been ordered to be held without bail and is scheduled to appear in court again on July 30. If convicted of the most serious charge, he faces a potential sentence ranging from 40 years to life in prison.
