Man stabs mother to death at their Long Island home and spends hours with her body, according to the district attorney.
A 30-year-old man from Long Island has been indicted for the alleged stabbing murder of his mother, aged 59, in their Brentwood residence, according to a release from the Suffolk County Prosecutor’s Office. Jason Kurumoglu is accused of killing Melida Velasquez and reportedly remaining with her body for several hours before law enforcement arrived on the scene.
The incident unfolded earlier this month after police received a 911 call, initiated by Velasquez’s daughter, who discovered the victim in their shared home on West White Street. When police responded, they located Velasquez deceased, with a knife found lodged in her back and considerable blood surrounding her, confirming the tragic nature of the event. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
As officers began to secure the premises, Kurumoglu emerged from the house and surrendered to authorities. Reports from officials suggest that he had dried blood on his hands as well as on a shirt he was carrying from his room, raising immediate concerns regarding his involvement in the crime.
Prior to the stabbing, investigators noted that Velasquez had been home alone until Kurumoglu returned around 1:30 p.m. that day, shortly after being dismissed from his job. A downstairs tenant reported hearing a significant thud shortly thereafter, followed by screams from the victim, including a plea for help. Witness accounts indicated a male voice in the residence at that time, further implicating Kurumoglu.
Based on investigative timelines, authorities believe Velasquez had been dead for approximately three hours when police arrived. The case raises alarming questions about domestic violence, as it has been reported that escalating tensions had existed in the household in the weeks leading up to the fatal incident. Kurumoglu was said to have frequent disputes with both his mother and stepfather, which had led to the stepfather temporarily leaving the residence.
Kurumoglu has been indicted on charges of second-degree murder and has pleaded not guilty. He has been ordered held without bail, with his next court appearance scheduled for October 18. If convicted, Kurumoglu faces a sentence of up to life imprisonment. Comments from his attorney were not available at the time of this report.
This tragic incident underscores the ongoing issues of domestic conflict and violence within families. The community is left to grapple with the implications of such violence as the legal proceedings continue in the weeks ahead.
