Megan Hilty withdraws from ‘Death Becomes Her’ to recuperate from vocal injury.

In a significant development following a lackluster showing at the recent 2025 Tony Awards, Megan Hilty, star of the Broadway production “Death Becomes Her,” has announced a temporary medical leave of absence from the hit musical. The 44-year-old actress, acclaimed for her portrayal of Madeline Ashton in the stage adaptation of the beloved 1992 film, revealed the news through her social media platforms.

Hilty, who received a Tony nomination for her performance, expressed the challenges she faces in executing what she describes as the most demanding yet fulfilling role of her career. She detailed the rigorous physical and vocal regimen she has maintained in order to perform consistently, emphasizing her deep passion for her craft. However, she has now deemed it necessary to take a step back for a duration of three to four weeks to heal from a vocal injury that requires time for recovery.

She articulated the physical demands of singing eight performances a week, comparing the rigorous nature of a Broadway performer’s schedule to that of a professional athlete. Hilty underscored that injuries are, regrettably, part of the landscape due to the exceptional strain these performances place on the body.

Hilty’s recent performance of “For the Gaze,” featured during the Tony Awards, was a highlight, showcasing her vocal prowess in a showstopper that included numerous costume changes. Despite being nominated for ten awards, “Death Becomes Her,” a production led by Christopher Gattelli, garnered only one win, for Best Costume Design by Oscar winner Paul Tazewell.

The ensemble cast of “Death Becomes Her” also includes notable talents such as Jennifer Simard, Christopher Sieber, Taurean Everett, and Grammy winner Michelle Williams. The production, which debuted at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in November 2024, was met with critical acclaim and attracted enthusiastic audiences.

As Hilty takes this necessary break, the Broadway community and fans alike will undoubtedly rally behind her, attributing great importance to the health and well-being of performers who bring such dynamic works to life on stage. The musical will continue to run in her absence, as preparations are made for her return following her recovery.
