Mexico braces for potential violence following the army’s elimination of a key leader from the Jalisco cartel.
In a significant escalation of violence in Mexico, the government reported that 25 members of the National Guard were killed in a series of attacks in Jalisco, triggered by the recent death of notorious cartel leader Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, also known as “El Mencho.” Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch confirmed that the violence resulted in the deaths of not only the National Guard members but also a prison guard, a state prosecutor’s agent, and an unidentified woman. Furthermore, around 30 criminal suspects were reported killed in the state of Jalisco and an additional four in Michoacan.

His criminal organization, the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), has gained notoriety for its ruthless tactics, including attacks on law enforcement officials, and has become a significant player in the trafficking of fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine to the United States. The cartel’s aggressive response to Oseguera’s death included blocking highways and setting vehicles ablaze across the country, instilling fear in local communities.
In the immediate aftermath of such turmoil, several states in Mexico canceled school sessions, while both local and international governments issued warnings urging their citizens to remain indoors for safety. The U.S. Embassy advised its personnel in various regions to shelter in place, reflecting the broader atmosphere of apprehension that has taken hold following the violent unrest.
President Claudia Sheinbaum called for calm and reported that authorities had begun dismantling over 250 cartel-related roadblocks established throughout 20 states. She is expected to address the nation regarding these developments in her daily briefing.
Furthermore, the White House acknowledged the intelligence support provided to Mexican forces during the operation and hailed the successful elimination of one of the most wanted criminals in both the United States and Mexico.
