Mexico’s military captures key leader of Jalisco New Generation Cartel, delivering a significant setback to the organization.

MEXICO CITY — In a significant development in the ongoing battle against organized crime in Mexico, the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) has suffered a substantial setback. On Monday, Mexican military forces apprehended one of the cartel’s leading figures, Audias Flores Silva, popularly known as “El Jardinero” or “The Gardener,” during an operation in the state of Nayarit.

Flores Silva’s capture comes just two months after the death of the cartel’s notorious leader, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, identified as “El Mencho.” This recent arrest occurred in a roadside ditch near the community of El Mirador, with officials stating that the operation was executed without any casualties. Importantly, the United States had placed a million reward for information leading to Flores Silva’s arrest, highlighting his significance within the criminal organization.

Following the killing of Oseguera Cervantes, the CJNG experienced a notable increase in violence across Mexico, including a series of attacks on businesses, vehicle burnings, and road blockades. These violent incidents resulted in fatalities exceeding 70 individuals, including 25 members of the National Guard. While the killing of “El Mencho” was perceived as a governmental triumph, its aftermath revealed the persistent challenges posed by organized crime in the region.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has intensified efforts to combat cartel operations more aggressively than previous administrations, partly in response to heightened concerns over potential interventions from U.S. President Donald Trump, who, last year, designated the CJNG and several other Mexican cartels as foreign terrorist organizations. Flores Silva’s apprehension is seen as a crucial step in the ongoing initiative to dismantle criminal networks that jeopardize public safety and contribute to the global fentanyl crisis.

As the head of security for Oseguera Cervantes, Flores Silva played a vital role in the cartel’s drug production and trafficking across several Mexican states, including Nayarit and Jalisco. Observers note that while his capture is detrimental to the CJNG, the cartel is known for its ability to adapt and reconstitute its leadership quickly. David Saucedo, a Mexican security analyst, remarked that despite setbacks, criminal organizations often have the capacity to persist in their operations.

Local news reports indicate a surge in violence in Nayarit following Flores Silva’s arrest, with multiple vehicles and businesses set ablaze. U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, Ronald Johnson, commended the capture, asserting that it reinforces efforts to enhance security and dismantle criminal enterprises that endanger communities in both nations.

Flores Silva’s criminal history includes a prior five-year imprisonment in the United States for drug trafficking and a subsequent arrest in 2016 for an ambush against police, from which he was released in 2019. The United States has been pursuing his extradition since 2021 on charges related to drug conspiracy and firearms possession.

As the CJNG continues to exert its influence across Mexico and beyond, analysts emphasize that the cartel operates in 21 of Mexico’s 32 states and has expanded its reach to approximately 100 countries, including the United States, underlying the transnational nature of its operations.
