Missing woman found in Poway storm drain has died following rescue efforts.
Authorities have reported that Yafang Zhou, a 59-year-old woman who had been missing for several days, died shortly after her rescue from a storm drain system in Poway, California. This tragic incident unfolded on Monday, April 3, when Zhou was found trapped within the drain, prompting a rapid response from emergency personnel.
Rescue teams located Zhou in the early afternoon after a meticulous search led them to the area south of Scripps Poway Parkway, over 20 miles northeast of downtown San Diego. The decision to search this area stemmed from information that was not publicly disclosed by the San Diego police department. Zhou had been reported missing to law enforcement on April 3, following her last known sighting on March 25.
Upon arrival at the storm drain’s entrance, rescuers discovered personal belongings belonging to Zhou and heard a voice emanating from the system. Responding rapidly, authorities from the Poway Fire Department and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department initiated the rescue operation. Fire-Rescue Battalion Chief Erik Windsor reported that fire crews utilized specialized listening devices which confirmed the presence of life within the drainage system.

Zhou was retrieved and transported to a local hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries later that evening, around 4:15 PM.
