MTV to broadcast music videos 24/7 in preparation for the 2025 Video Music Awards.
MTV is gearing up to make a significant impact as it approaches the 2025 Video Music Awards (VMAs). In a bold initiative to honor its storied history, the network has announced a round-the-clock showcase of both current and classic music videos. This programming marathon is set to commence on Monday and will continue non-stop until the awards ceremony the following Sunday.
The curated music video lineup will be featured on several of MTV’s sister channels, including MTV2, MTV Live, MTV Classic, and the Pluto channel “MTV Biggest Pop.” However, it is noteworthy that the flagship MTV channel will not participate in this special event. Instead, it will continue to air reruns of reality shows and a selection of comedy films and canceled sitcoms, a stark contrast to its origins steeped in music video culture.
The countdown to the VMAs will include a broad array of over 700 music videos, many of which have not been aired in over a decade. These videos will be categorized into twelve distinct themes, including “Best of the 1980s,” “Best of the 1990s,” and “TRL No. 1s,” which will showcase historical favorites from the iconic “Total Request Live” era. Other themes will highlight the most notorious music videos, celebrate celebrity cameos, and even explore the highest-budget productions in music video history.
Notable artists featured in the marathon include Britney Spears, Beyoncé, Madonna, Eminem, Michael Jackson, and the Backstreet Boys, among others. Each of these performers holds prominence in the music video landscape, ensuring a nostalgic viewing experience for audiences of all ages. Mariah Carey, who is set to receive this year’s Video Vanguard Award, will have nine of her videos showcased during this week-long event.
MTV’s last consistent airing of music videos as part of its regular programming occurred in the early 2000s, although clips were intermittently featured on “Total Request Live” until its cancellation in 2008. The upcoming 2025 VMAs will also represent a milestone, as for the first time, the event will be broadcast live on CBS. Scheduled for Sunday, September 7, at 8 p.m. ET, the ceremony will originate from the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York. Hosted by LL Cool J, the event promises to captivate audiences and showcase the continuing evolution of music and entertainment.
The significance of these initiatives underscores MTV’s commitment to reviving its music video heritage while adapting to contemporary viewing trends. As the network re-engages with its roots, viewers can anticipate a vibrant celebration that honors the cultural impact of music videos across decades.
