A New Jersey man has been charged with murder and arson, following an investigation into a house fire that resulted in the death of an elderly woman. William Ahle, 70, of Fanwood, initially portrayed himself as a heroic neighbor attempting to save 82-year-old Virginia Cranwell from the flames engulfing her home on Kempshall Terrace on July 25. He had reportedly claimed to be walking his dog around 1:30 a.m. when he noticed the fire and rushed into the residence to rescue Cranwell, but was allegedly repelled by the intense heat and flames.

Despite his claims of heroism, subsequent investigations by the Union County Prosecutor’s Office revealed that the fire had been intentionally set and ruled Cranwell’s death a homicide. The grim discovery of her body was made in a second-floor bedroom approximately 20 minutes after firefighters extinguished the blaze. Following the initial reports, Ahle was severely injured in the incident, suffering considerable burns that necessitated treatment at the Burn Center at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston.

On Wednesday, nearly five months post-incident, Ahle was formally charged with first-degree murder, first-degree felony murder, second-degree aggravated arson, and first-degree burglary. He remains in custody at the Middlesex County Jail, awaiting his next court appearance.

The fire and its aftermath have left many in the local community reeling. Neighbors expressed their shock upon learning of Ahle’s arrest, describing him as a well-liked member of the community, often referred to as the “mayor of the street” due to his helpful nature and attentiveness to fellow residents.
