New Jersey man pleads guilty to reckless driving in Ferrari crash that resulted in the death of a 92-year-old woman.

A New Jersey man has pleaded guilty to third-degree vehicular homicide following a tragic accident that resulted in the death of a 92-year-old retired teacher, Albert Schnellbacher. This admission comes after Scott Lieberman was initially charged with a more severe count of second-degree reckless manslaughter, which prosecutors decided to drop as part of a plea agreement.

The incident occurred on June 25, 2022, shortly after Lieberman had purchased his luxury 2022 Ferrari Competizione from Rockland County, New York. At approximately 2 p.m., Lieberman collided with Schnellbacher’s 2008 SUV while the elderly man was making a left turn at the intersection of Windsor and Briarcliffe roads in Teaneck. Witness accounts and police investigations revealed that Lieberman was driving recklessly at the time of the accident, having admitted in court that he was speeding and crossed over the yellow line before impact.

Following the crash, Lieberman attempted to shift some of the blame to Ferrari, filing a lawsuit against the automaker. He claimed that the company had failed to rectify a recalled braking system in his vehicle. However, during the court proceedings, Lieberman conceded that the mechanical issues of the Ferrari did not contribute to the accident.

The family of the deceased expressed their relief that Lieberman has ultimately accepted responsibility for his actions. Attorney Robert Linder, representing the Schnellbacher family, commented on the outcome, indicating their satisfaction with Lieberman’s guilty plea and acknowledgment of his reckless behavior.

As the legal proceedings continue, prosecutors have indicated their intent to seek prison time for Lieberman. Conversely, the defense is advocating for probation as a suitable sentence. Lieberman’s sentencing is scheduled for October, where the court will weigh the circumstances of the case, including the impact of the crash on Schnellbacher’s family and Lieberman’s admission of guilt.

The tragic death of Albert Schnellbacher serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by reckless driving, particularly with high-performance vehicles, and the legal ramifications that follow such incidents. The outcome of Lieberman’s case may prompt broader discussions regarding accountability and safety in the realm of luxury sports cars.
