New Superintendent Appointed for Upcoming School Year
As the academic year commences, the Wallingford-Swarthmore School District introduces its new superintendent, Russell Johnston, who previously served as acting commissioner of elementary and secondary education in Massachusetts. Johnston begins his role with a five-year contract, following the temporary leadership of Jim Scanlon, who filled the position after the departure of former Superintendent Wagner Marseille in August 2022.
In his new role, Johnston emphasizes the importance of community engagement and open communication. He believes in building relationships where all stakeholders can express their concerns and celebrate the district’s achievements together. His approach aims to foster a supportive environment for both educators and families within the community.
In addition to the leadership change in the school district, Swarthmore is preparing to appoint its new borough manager, Sean Halbom, during a vote scheduled for September 2. Halbom, who has extensive experience in local governance, will take over from Bill Webb, who is leaving to pursue a government position in Virginia.
Delaware County is on the verge of becoming the first collar county in the Philadelphia area to implement a non-discrimination ordinance that would protect individuals from discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. The county council is expected to vote on this ordinance as early as September.
In healthcare developments, the county has appointed Belmont Behavioral Health to operate a new 24/7 crisis center that will address mental health emergencies, filling the gap left by Crozer Health’s recent closure. Additionally, the Foundation for Delaware County has committed million to assist with medical record costs for thousands of former Crozer patients.
Transportation officials are also addressing frustrations related to delays experienced by SEPTA riders, which officials attribute to necessary safety checks on aging railcars rather than the upcoming schedule reductions. These adjustments, set for September 2, will include reduced service on several lines, including the Media/Wawa route.
Meanwhile, Wawa has been recognized as one of Pennsylvania’s best employers according to a recent Forbes report, reflecting the company’s commitment to its workforce and service quality.
Lastly, residents in Wallingford and the surrounding areas can participate in various community events and stay informed about local improvements through ongoing initiatives and surveys aimed at enhancing quality of life.
