New ‘Yellowstone’ spinoff by Taylor Sheridan begins filming 20 miles south of Dallas.

In a significant development for the town of Ferris, Texas, approximately 20 miles south of Dallas, filming for a new television series spinoff of the popular show Yellowstone has commenced. The production of Rio Palo, under the creative direction of Fort Worth-born television producer and director Taylor Sheridan, is transforming the local landscape into a set that is expected to enhance the visibility of this small community.

City Manager Brooks Williams confirmed that the filming is taking place on a ranch in Ferris, which features a mansion that is anticipated to serve as a family residence within the storyline. Additionally, several locations on the outskirts of Ferris and within its downtown area are being utilized for shooting. Williams emphasized the unique geographical features of the area, noting that visitors might be surprised by the striking elevation changes and landscapes that could easily be mistaken for a location far from the Dallas metropolitan area.

The production is projected to conclude within the next four months, during which time residents should prepare for possible road closures. City officials have reassured the community that notifications regarding any disruptions will be distributed in advance to keep residents informed.

While Paramount+, the streaming service behind Sheridan’s works, has yet to disclose specific plot details for Rio Palo, speculation persists regarding potential connections to another spinoff, Dutton Ranch. This upcoming series is rumored to follow beloved characters Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler, particularly in the aftermath of the fifth and final season of Yellowstone, which aired last fall.

Sheridan’s productions have increasingly drawn attention to the North Texas area. Recent reports indicate that crews for the second season of Landman, another of Sheridan’s projects, have also been busy filming in locations such as downtown Fort Worth and Dallas, as well as smaller towns like Jacksboro and Springtown.

The revitalization of Ferris as a filming location evokes memories of its past involvement in film and television. The town has previously hosted productions, including the ’90s crime drama Walker, Texas Ranger, and notable political advertisements. Williams expressed optimism about the town’s resurgence, highlighting recent efforts to enhance its small-town charm and attractiveness for future productions.

As enigmatic as it may be, Taylor Sheridan’s television universe continues to expand, bringing both economic and cultural opportunities to communities in North Texas. The enhanced visibility from productions like Rio Palo may usher in a new chapter for Ferris, showcasing its distinct beauty and potential to a broader audience.
