A nurse from Pelham, New York, has been sentenced to five months in prison for her involvement in a tampering incident involving controlled opioid medications at a Connecticut hospital. Kristen Carotenuto, 35, was found guilty of removing vials of hydromorphone and fentanyl from a secure storage area within a Stamford surgical center. This incident occurred in December, as confirmed by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

According to the DEA’s public statements, Carotenuto accessed the surgical center’s secure storage and subsequently took several vials home. There, she extracted the controlled substances using a syringe and consumed the drugs. In an attempt to cover her actions, Carotenuto allegedly refilled the vacated vials with saline solution or water before returning them to the surgical center. Importantly, authorities indicated that there is no evidence suggesting that any of the substituted liquids were administered to patients.

In the wake of her actions, Carotenuto pleaded guilty to the charge of tampering with a consumer product. Following her conviction, she was released on a ,000 bond but must report to prison by October 1.
