Northeast Philly halal market expands from a Wawa success to take over a Big Lots location.

A former Big Lots store in Northeast Philadelphia is set to be transformed into a new location for ASR Market, a popular halal grocery and takeout destination. The new site, encompassing nearly 24,000 square feet, is located at the intersection of Bustleton and Philmont Avenues, adjacent to the Philadelphia-Bucks County border. This development marks an important expansion for ASR Market, which first opened in a smaller space in the area just a block away.

ASR Market has quickly become a neighborhood staple under the ownership of Aziz Khan. The original location, which spans approximately 6,000 square feet, has charmed locals with its offerings of fresh produce, two buffet lines featuring halal dishes, slow-roasted shawarma, and an array of baked goods. The new location promises to enhance the shopping experience by introducing seating, expanded takeout options, and increased shelf space for groceries and halal products.

Steve Perna, a real estate professional involved in securing the deal for the new space, emphasized the dedication and hard work demonstrated by the Khan family, which has been pivotal in establishing ASR Market as a go-to spot in the community. The long hours of operation, from 6 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. daily, reflect their commitment to serving customers effectively.

Beyond the remarkable success of ASR Market, this story encapsulates a broader narrative about local businesses triumphing over larger national retailers in securing valuable real estate. The building’s owner, Roberto Pupo, who emigrated from Rome as a teenager, built a successful business in Philadelphia and has now chosen to support ASR Market. This decision highlights the importance of nurturing local entrepreneurship and the mentorship between generations of business owners.

The new ASR Market location is slated to open in the fall of 2025 at 15501 Bustleton Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19116. Following its opening, the market is expected to maintain its established operating hours, providing residents with consistent access to quality halal food options and a thriving community hub. For updates on the new venue, customers can follow ASR Market on social media platforms like Instagram.

As this transformation unfolds, it not only reflects the evolution of retail in the area but also reinforces the significance of community-focused establishments within the local economy.
