NYPD officer injured by friendly fire while apprehending a carjacker in Queens has been discharged from the hospital.

A New York Police Department (NYPD) detective who sustained injuries from friendly fire while attempting to apprehend a carjacking suspect in Queens has been discharged from Jamaica Hospital. Detective Corey Fisher, accompanied by his pregnant wife, exited the hospital to applause from a crowd of fellow officers on Monday, marking a significant moment in his recovery.

Detective Fisher suffered multiple gunshot wounds—specifically to his arm and leg—in the incident that has raised concerns about police protocols regarding the use of firearms. Medical professionals, including Dr. Katherine McKenzie, the trauma medical director at the hospital, indicated that while Fisher’s prognosis is positive, the recovery process may take several weeks to months before he fully regains his pre-incident health.

The incident involving Detective Fisher unfolded on a Friday morning when 28-year-old Kevin Dubuisson allegedly attempted to carjack an Uber driver on the Whitestone Expressway. It is reported that Dubuisson, a four-time felon, confronted the driver with a metal object, leading police forces that included Detective Fisher to respond quickly. Initial reports clarified that Dubuisson was unarmed at the time of the police engagement; however, he had previously attempted to carjack two other drivers and was involved in other criminal activities just hours before the incident with the Uber driver.

Scott Munro, president of the Detectives’ Endowment Association, expressed the need for legislative reforms aimed at ensuring repeat offenders serve longer sentences, reflecting a growing concern regarding public safety and the implications of ongoing criminal behavior.

Detective Fisher’s discharge was met with support from the NYPD community. Officials, including NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch and other high-ranking officers, extended their well wishes to Fisher and his family as they transition into recovery. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face daily and the complexities involved in addressing crime in urban environments.

The developing situation continues to draw attention to discussions surrounding law enforcement tactics and public safety policies, highlighting the potential need for comprehensive reforms.
